Elections must comply primarily with the national legislation of the state. This was stated by President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on September 19 at a meeting with heads of election bodies of the CIS countries, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.
"We need to study world experience as well. It is unlikely that we will find anything there – probably, we have all studied and adopted appropriate decisions at home. It is important to develop our own standards, and the main standard that we all always follow is not about how some principles will be imposed on us "by agreement" by the OSCE or some other organizations, but about how much our laws and regulations will comply with the Constitution, and how much the elections will comply with the legislation adopted in our countries. This is the main thing," emphasized Alexander Lukashenko.
The Head of State recalled that a presidential electoral campaign will soon be held in Belarus, and the country proceeds from the principles he voiced. "The Belarusian people must determine for themselves, without any pressure, who will lead the country," the President stated.
It is also important to guarantee an adequate level of security for the electoral process and ensure citizens' trust in its results. "We pay special attention to the youth. Here, the focus is primarily on the political literacy of young people. We need to explain, to tell people how we will live after the elections. Youth is – and this is no secret – the main street tool of color revolutions, so we pay special attention to youth. We need to find common ground with young voters, and if you have such experience, you will share it during your visit to Belarus," added Alexander Lukashenko.
The President is confident that the interaction of the central election bodies of the CIS countries will allow for the successful resolution of the most serious tasks and problems. "I would very much like you to continue to maintain this business cooperation that has developed between the central election commissions. As we say, it is priceless. We must not lose it under any circumstances," the Belarusian leader concluded.
