During the summer, the number of cyclists on the roads increases sharply. Among those riding two-wheeled vehicles, one can see both young people and the older generation. The trend of choosing a bicycle as a more environmentally friendly and healthy mode of transport is gaining popularity every year and, of course, is a welcome development. At the same time, every person transitioning from pedestrian to cyclist must know and observe the Road Traffic Regulations concerning bicycle movement, as a cyclist is a full participant in traffic.
To ensure that cycling trips bring joy and benefit, it is necessary to follow simple rules:
- Before each trip, thoroughly check the serviceability of the bicycle's braking and steering systems;
- Ensure that the bicycle is equipped in accordance with the Road Traffic Regulations: it must have a rear-view mirror, a white reflector at the front, a red one at the rear, and orange reflectors on both sides of the bicycle;
- When riding in the dark, the bicycle must also be equipped with a lamp emitting white light at the front and a lamp emitting red light at the rear;
- When riding in the dark, cyclists are also recommended to wear high-visibility vests or reflective elements;
- Children under 14 years of age are allowed to ride bicycles in courtyards, on sports grounds and stadiums, on forest roads and clearings, but under no circumstances should they ride on roads and streets.
When cycling, remember: You are a driver operating a vehicle and must observe the rules applicable to you, as liability for violating the Road Traffic Regulations by cyclists is provided for by Article 18.23 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Republic of Belarus.
Always be attentive, and may your cycling trips bring only pleasure!
