From March 10 to October 15, 2020, a preventive campaign "Preservation of Property at a Dacha is a Common Task" is being held in the Lepel district.
Almost every third crime is committed due to the careless attitude of the victims themselves towards the preservation of their property and the low level of security of its storage places. Thieves like easy prey. They do not like open windows, as the sound of broken glass can attract attention. In 2019, 1 theft from dacha properties of citizens was committed in the Lepel district (2018-1). The main reasons for committing these crimes were the lack of reinforcement of dacha properties.
So, can thefts be prevented or not?
You can do something yourself – reinforce your doors, install strong locks, reinforce window openings with metal grilles. But if you are not sure that a metal door and a grille on the window will help you keep your property intact, then you should contact the Lepel Security Department, whose representatives consider an alarm system to be the best protection against thieves today. Remember that by taking precautions, you can prevent a crime. And this is much easier than finding the perpetrators of the theft.
Once again, we would like to remind dacha owners of some safety rules:
- always lock your dacha property, even when leaving it for a short while to visit neighboursin most garden associations and cooperatives, there is none at all. The rest
rely on luck.
However, in accordance with the requirements of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus
of 28.01.2018 No. 50 "On Measures to Regulate the Activities of Horticultural Cooperatives", it is prescribed to establish voluntary
squads at horticultural cooperatives.
The issue of establishing voluntary squads and guard patrols cannot be resolved by law enforcement agencies alone.
In this regard, we would like to appeal to the members of horticultural cooperatives: "do not rely on chance", but take measures yourselves to organize guard patrols
or duty shifts.
When thefts are committed, citizens suffer material and moral damage.
Moreover, neither a manager nor a rank-and-file employee is insured against criminal encroachments.
This situation is unfavorable in the autumn-winter period, when gardeners
have already harvested their crops and left their dachas.
As a rule, the crime is reported after a considerable period of time, resulting in the loss of the opportunity for prompt crime resolution.
However, if gardeners had taken measures to winterize their dacha houses
and removed their belongings, equipped window openings with grilles, and entrance doors with reliable locks, then thefts could have been avoided.
As a rule, the main reason contributing to theft is the negligence and carelessness of citizens themselves regarding the safety of their property, as well as drinking alcohol with unfamiliar people.

Standard doors and locks do not pose a significant obstacle even for an novice criminal. Do not forget about basement windows and doors, garage doors,
as they can be used to enter the house. Consider automatic
light switches, so-called presence simulators. When leaving for a long time,
ask trusted neighbours to keep an eye on the house.
