Many believe that a glass of wine or one or two shots of vodka will not affect driving. No one at the same time thinks that driving a vehicle while intoxicated is prohibited by law and entails not only a considerable fine but also the deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a period of 3 years. And yet, for many drivers, a vehicle is a source of income. The driver "under the influence" is also not concerned by the fact that close people are in the car, whose safety, first and foremost, depends on the driver.
The following signs may be sufficient grounds to believe that the driver is in a state of intoxication: the smell of alcohol from the mouth; unsteady posture; pronounced trembling of the fingers; slurred speech; a sharp change in the colour of the facial skin; behaviour that does not correspond to the situation.
In the event that a driver is brought to justice for the first time for driving while intoxicated, transferring a car to a drunk person, or refusing an examination, the fine ranges from 50 to 100 base units. At the same time, the driver is deprived of the right to drive all types of vehicles for a period of 3 years.
If a driver commits such a violation for the second time within a year, the vehicle, including one not belonging to them, is subject to confiscation. Penalties also include deprivation of rights for up to five years with correctional labour, arrest, or restriction of liberty with a fine of up to one thousand base units, as well as imprisonment for up to two years.
Despite the strict measures, some drivers allow themselves to get behind the wheel while intoxicated. In this regard, from July 24 to July 28, 2020, events are being held on the territory of the Republic of Belarus aimed at preventing and suppressing instances of driving by intoxicated drivers.
