Each year, the institution's specialists accept about 7,000 cases for storage. However, after the commissioning of a new archive repository, this figure will increase to 12,000.
"Since the beginning of 2018, after acquiring a book scanner, we have been digitizing documents ourselves. Currently, a total of over 400 cases have been digitized (97 last year). This year, three times more are planned – 305. Primarily, particularly valuable and frequently used documents are being converted to electronic format," noted Tatyana Svistunova. "The regional archive annually handles about 1,700 requests, and around 30 researchers from abroad work there. The history of one's family and the study of genealogy are very popular topics at present."
In addition, the archive has prepared a collection titled "Theatre of Revolutionary Satire in Vitebsk." The new publication includes 183 documents from 1918-1921 from the archives of Belarus and Russia, with the main part being published for the first time. The collection is supplemented with articles by specialists on this subject.
The Vitebsk Regional State Archives holds documents of organizations that operated in the territory of the Vitebsk Governorate, District, and Region from 1917 to the present day. As of today, the archive has collected over 1.3 million documents. The archive's zone of responsibility includes Vitebsk with its district, Beshenkovichi, Chashniki, Gorodok, Liozno, and Shumiilino districts. Other regions of the oblast are under the purview of the zonal state archives in the cities of Glubokoye, Polotsk, and Orsha.
