The Water Sports Palace was transferred from "Naftan" OJSC to the city in the final days of 2015. By this time, the main facility of the institution – the swimming pool – was in a dilapidated state and had been inoperative since the autumn of 2015. "Athletes and general swimming enthusiasts had to use other facilities – the "Izumrud" swimming pool and two others in city schools, all 25-meter ones. However, replacing the "Sadko" swimming pool, the only 50-meter one in the entire region, is difficult. Therefore, the capital repair of the pool basin was carried out as promptly as funding allowed," explained Andrey Ilyin, Deputy Head of the Department of Education, Sports and Tourism.
As noted by Tatyana Genova, Director of the Children and Youth Sports School No. 3 named after N. Genov, the dimensions of the pool basin remain the same – 8 lanes, 50 m in length, with a depth varying from 2.5 to 5 m. The capital repair project included strengthening the load-bearing structures, restoring the pool's watertightness, partial replacement of the pipeline, and repair of the surrounding walkways. These works required over Br6 billion (undenominated rubles), and the renovation was carried out by "Nefte Zavod Montazh" OJSC. "In addition, we carried out current repairs concurrently: we painted the walls in the swimming pool, replaced the collector and pipes in the basement, insulation, and restored the fire alarm system," added Natalya Genova.
Today, "Sadko" is already accepting registrations for swimming lessons, and it is also open for recreational swimming, as well as for training athletes from three departments of the Children and Youth Sports School: water skiing, underwater sports, and swimming. The sauna and sports halls continue to operate in their usual mode: the game hall (which also hosts fitness, yoga, and other classes), the gym, the martial arts hall, and the bodybuilding hall.
