Belarus and the Kaliningrad region are considering the possibility of implementing joint projects for the processing of agricultural products, BELTA was informed by the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. This was discussed during negotiations held today in Minsk between the Ministers of Agriculture of Belarus and the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation, Leonid Zayats and Vladimir Zarudny. The parties stated the need to move to a new level of cooperation by implementing joint export-oriented projects in the field of agricultural production and processing. According to them, the creation of the Single Economic Space and Russia's accession to the WTO contribute to this. As emphasized by Vladimir Zarudny, the Kaliningrad region can become a good production platform for such projects and is ready to provide land plots with the necessary infrastructure for their organization. Initially, egg processing, meat, and powdered milk were named as possible areas. Considering the Kaliningrad region's focus on the development of beef and dairy cattle breeding, Leonid Zayats believes that the construction of dairy farms, slaughterhouses, and poultry farms according to Belarusian projects may be in demand in this region. Vladimir Zarudny, in turn, expressed a high interest in the participation of Belarusian organizations in the implementation of the land reclamation program in the Kaliningrad region. Among the possible areas of cooperation, the parties also highlighted pedigree animal husbandry, crop breeding, aquaculture, fruit growing, protected ground vegetable production, and the supply of agricultural and land reclamation machinery and equipment. It is planned that for more detailed elaboration of possible joint projects, working visits to the Kaliningrad region by representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of Belarus and its subordinate organizations will take place in the current month. For 9 months of 2012, the trade turnover of agricultural and food products of organizations of Belarus and the Kaliningrad region amounted to $52.1 million (98.5% compared to the same period in 2011), including exports from Belarus - $20.9 million. The basis of exports in January-September 2012 was the supply of butter, eggs, sausages, poultry meat, and flour. Belarus purchases ready-made, canned, frozen fish and crustaceans, soybean meal, soybean oil, and rapeseed from the Kaliningrad region.
