"There are countries that ensure their food security through imports, through high incomes of the population – these countries have something to sell on the world market and buy food with that money. Why should we buy food if we have favorable conditions for its production?" Vladimir Gusakov asked a rhetorical question. "Certainly, to maintain a normal market system and the necessary level of competitiveness, a certain share of imports should be present in the food market."
As for scientifically based consumption norms, the optimal level has been reached for meat and meat products, slightly below for milk and dairy products, and close to optimal for fish and fish products. "Emphasis should be placed on the consumption of seafood according to scientifically based norms. This is incorporated into the developing national food security doctrine," said the Chairman of the Presidium of the NAS. He added that a similar document was adopted in Russia several years ago.
The most pressing issues in the context of Belarus reaching a new level of food security are high-quality nutrition, food, the demand for Belarusian products in foreign markets, as well as integration into the global food market. "Belarus produces the same range of products as other countries – Russia, Ukraine, Poland, the Baltic states, etc. Our path is the impeccable quality of Belarusian products. And we have made a breakthrough in this in recent years," emphasized Vladimir Gusakov.
