This was stated by Yuri Ambrazhevich, Head of the Main Department for Multilateral Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, at an open debate in the UN Security Council, which was convened to discuss new trends in the implementation of UN peacekeeping operations (PKOs). This was stated by Yuri Ambrazhevich, Head of the Main Department for Multilateral Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, at an open debate in the UN Security Council, which was convened to discuss new trends in the implementation of UN peacekeeping operations (PKOs). The diplomat stressed that Belarus pursues a consistent and responsible policy in the sphere of maintaining international peace and security. One of the most striking examples is Belarus's refusal in 1993, as the first of the former USSR countries, to possess nuclear weapons.
"Belarus is gradually joining UN peacekeeping operations: today, Belarusian representatives are working in the UN mission in Lebanon," noted Yuri Ambrazhevich.
According to him, for Belarus, which lost about a third of its population during World War II, the issue of sending military personnel abroad requires public consent and understanding. Therefore, at the state level, the possibility of expanding the participation of the country's representatives in UN PKOs is considered taking into account all factors and very carefully.
The MFA representative emphasized the importance of UN PKOs, which today are one of the main stabilizing factors in conflict zones around the world. At the same time, Yuri Ambrazhevich is convinced that UN PKOs should be carried out in strict accordance with the operation's mandate and with respect for principles such as sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of the host state.-0-
