August 2, Minsk /BELTA correspondent/. The first award of the XXX Summer Olympic Games to the Belarusian team's tally was brought by weightlifter Maryna Shkermankova, reports BELTA correspondent.
In the weight category up to 69 kg, she became the owner of a bronze medal, scoring a total of 256 kg in the two-event competition (113 kg - snatch + 143 kg - clean and jerk). The Olympic Games 2012 champion was Jon Sim Ri from the DPRK - 261 (115 + 146), and the silver medal went to Roxana Cocos from Romania, who had identical results to Shkermankova, but her body weight was 210 g less than the Belarusian's.
Another Belarusian weightlifter, Dzinа Sazanavets, stopped one step short of the Olympic podium, scoring the same total as the silver and bronze medalists. However, due to her greater body weight, she took 4th place.
The newly-minted Olympic bronze medalist Maryna Shkermankova was born on April 9, 1990. She only recently transitioned from the junior to the senior category. Prior to today's success, Maryna had twice become the European Junior Champion, and was a silver and bronze medalist at the youth championships of the Old World.
