There are no significant changes in the development of the epidemic process in Belarus, said Deputy Minister of Health - Chief State Sanitary Doctor Natalya Zhukova on the air of the program "Kontury" on ONT channel, according to BELTA.
"An assessment of the epidemiological situation regarding respiratory infections is carried out weekly throughout the year. Since October, we have registered some increase, with the peak usually occurring in February. We have not observed any significant changes in the development of the epidemic process yet; in fact, the situation is similar to last year's. Children account for approximately 65% of the morbidity structure," said Natalya Zhukova.
According to her, population vaccination helps to create herd immunity. This year, the vaccine was chosen considering the expected circulation of influenza A and B viruses. "70 samples were tested this week, and we are already detecting influenza A virus. Influenza B virus usually arrives at the end of the epidemic peak. This diagnostic system allows us to assess the situation across the country. This also affects the forecast for medical support, i.e., the required number of beds, drug reserves; in any case, these issues are under constant control of the Ministry of Health," noted the Deputy Minister.
Natalya Zhukova emphasized that vaccination helps vaccinated individuals avoid complications later. "And even if we say that there are cases of illness among the vaccinated, firstly, these are most likely acute respiratory infections caused by viruses other than influenza. But even if the causative agent is the influenza virus, we do not observe severe illness. Every year, we обязательно assess the vaccination rate among those who fall ill. And we want to say that primarily unvaccinated people get sick," she said.
Regarding folk remedies, they are worth using for prevention, but in case of illness, it is necessary to consult a doctor. "In such a case, it is advisable to stay at home to avoid endangering others with infection and to follow the doctor's prescriptions. Respiratory viruses are transmitted by airborne droplets, but one should not forget about contact transmission either. It is essential to remember hand hygiene and the so-called respiratory etiquette rules: use special handkerchiefs, wear a mask if necessary. Tempering, spending time in the fresh air – all this also improves health," added Natalia Zhukova.
