The Gymnasiade programme includes alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, biathlon, curling, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, and snowboarding. "The Belarusian team will participate in three of these disciplines: curling, biathlon, and alpine skiing. We hope that the young athletes will achieve worthy results," noted Eduard Tomilchik. He wished the schoolchildren success at the Gymnasiade, emphasizing its significance for them as the Olympic Games are for adult athletes.
A farewell ceremony for the Belarusian sports delegation to the I World Winter Gymnasiade was held in Minsk. The captain of the sports delegation is biathlete Anton Shidlovsky. His best result of the season is fourth place in the mass start at the first stage of the Belarusian Biathlon Federation Cup.
Belarus has been a member of the International School Sport Federation (ISF) since 2012. During this time, Belarusian student athletes have participated twice in the World Summer Gymnasiades: in 2013 in Brazil, and in 2016 in Turkey, bringing home 4 and 14 medals of various categories, respectively.
