Belarusian State University will celebrate its 100th anniversary on October 30. This event has been included in the list of UNESCO commemorative dates, granting the occasion international status and confirming the significant contribution of the Belarusian university to the development of global education and science. In honour of its 100th anniversary, the university has updated its partners' wall. It is located on the 2nd floor of the university administration building, near the BSU Council meeting hall. Important events, award ceremonies, meetings with distinguished guests, and working meetings are held here. The composition reflects the multifaceted nature of BSU's international activities and expresses gratitude to partners for effective cooperation in education and science.
"The large-scale design is based on the symbol of the 'fern flower', embodying enlightenment and the pursuit of knowledge, while the idea of continuity and inter-university ties is revealed through the image of neural networks, uniting generations of different decades and the global university community. The exposition is complemented by exquisite glass plaques with the names of partner universities with which BSU currently collaborates most actively. In total, the university has over 500 agreements with universities from 59 countries, including Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Germany, Poland, Japan, Israel, Indonesia, Switzerland, Egypt, Oman, and Kazakhstan. The oldest active document of international cooperation is the 1967 agreement on scientific and cultural cooperation with Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany)," the press service reported.
Incidentally, the emphasis on international scientific and educational ties was also made in the 1920s by the first rector of BSU, Vladimir Picheta. During his tenure, scientific business trips of university staff to Germany, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Poland, and other countries were organized. In the post-war period, BSU's international contacts resumed in August 1955. At that time, 10 students from Poland came to study at the Belarusian university. The following year, a student from Canada was sent to study under an individual program at the Faculty of Philology of BSU. In the first half of the 1960s, student exchanges began to be conducted. In addition, from September 1, 1961, BSU became the first university in Belarus and one of the four universities in the Soviet Union to train foreign citizens at the preparatory faculty.
BSU is among the top 1.0% of universities in the world according to global rankings. Out of 20 existing rankings, the university is represented in 12 global and 7 subject rankings, the main ones being the "big three" rankings. In QS, BSU ranks 295th, in U.S.News - 367th, and in the Shanghai subject ranking, it is the only Belarusian university and is placed in the 201-300 range. The BSU electronic library is among the top three university repositories in the world.
Over almost a century, BSU has trained about 185,000 specialists, 4,700 candidates of sciences, 700 doctors of sciences, and more than 15,000 foreign specialists, master's students, and postgraduate students. Among its graduates are renowned scientists, academicians, professors, laureates of state prizes of the USSR, BSSR, and Belarus, and top managers of large companies. People's poets, Honored Figures, and Olympic medalists have graduated from BSU.
