The interlocutor noted that the idea of measuring height using something unusual is not new. In Braslav, Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace" was chosen as the unit of measurement. A height chart was made using the voluminous work, which is located in the central district library. "In almost a week, more than 100 people have already used it. Among them are both teenagers and adult readers. During group activities, there is even a queue forming around it. Some come specifically to measure their height. The result is recorded on a special business card form, which the reader keeps as a souvenir," said Irina Makarevich.
The library staff did not expect such a buzz from the implementation of the idea, but they are pleased with the effect achieved: perhaps for someone, this will become a reason to read this or another book. "Those who come to the library out of curiosity, as a rule, do not return home empty-handed," she emphasized.
In December, the unusual height chart will travel to rural libraries on a bookmobile.
Touching upon other initiatives, Irina Makarevich noted the "Free Street Library" project. It has been implemented since 2016 based on the principle of bookcrossing. A special house has been installed near the library, which contains 20-25 books and periodicals on two shelves in free access. There are benches nearby. "People can come and take any book or magazine without registration and read it at home or right here, and then return it. The project is popular," the interlocutor added.
