28 May, Polotsk /Diana Kurilo - BELTA/. Over 100,000 people took part in celebrations marking the 1150th anniversary of Polotsk in just two days, as reported to BELTA correspondent by the Head of the Polotsk Department of Internal Affairs, Alexey Shakhovich.
More than 10,000 guests visited the city during the festive days. As noted by the Head of the Department of Internal Affairs, the situation was calm during these days. No serious offences were recorded.
The celebrations in Polotsk for the 1150th anniversary are ongoing. On Wednesday, 30 May, the jubilee city will bid farewell to its young residents – secondary school graduates. A city-wide "Graduate-2012" last bell celebration will be held in their honour. On International Children's Day, 1 June, the open city children's vocal competition "On the Wings of a Dream" will take place. Orthodox creativity "Polotsk Gathers Compatriots" will be presented on 2 June. Bell ringing and spiritual chants will resound over the ancient city.
The "Rubon" medieval culture festival was well-received by the residents of Polotsk, and they decided to combine it with the jubilee celebrations, holding it from 1 to 3 June. Historical reconstruction clubs from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic will send their knights to Polotsk to demonstrate their strength in tournaments and their courage in storming the castle – a captivating and dynamic spectacle.
The culmination of the celebrations will be the commemoration day of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk on 5 June. Divine liturgies will be held in the churches of the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral Monastery, along with a procession from the Saint Sophia Cathedral to the monastery. -0-
