Since the beginning of the current year, more than ten cases of fraud using social networks have been recorded in Novopolotsk, Andrey Labud, an operative officer of the criminal investigation department of the Novopolotsk city internal affairs department, told a BELTA correspondent. The essence of this type of fraud is that criminals, by deception, gain access to information about the mobile phone subscriber numbers of the victims, as well as information about the code sent by the internet resource administration to activate the service for purchasing bonus units, so-called "OKs". Technically, everything is very simple, and the goal of a virtual fraudster does not differ from that pursued by his "colleagues" working directly with the victim: to gain trust and obtain the necessary information or money. Thus, at the end of February, a resident of Novopolotsk contacted the City Department of Internal Affairs stating that an unknown person had gained unauthorized access to her mobile subscriber account and had withdrawn funds in the amount of Br700 thousand. During the check, it was established that shortly before that, the applicant's son, using his mother's phone, had accessed the Internet on the "Odnoklassniki" website and saw that an SMS message had arrived on his page from an unfamiliar girl, in which she asked "do you need OKs?". As Andrey Labud explained, OKs are points thanks to which one can send gifts, postcards, and other services in "Odnoklassniki". Then the stranger sent a message stating that there was currently a promotion and OKs were free. The young man did not refuse such an attractive offer. Another message arrived from the stranger: "An SMS will come to your mobile phone, there will be four digits, write them down and send them to me on 'Odnoklassniki'." Almost immediately, a message appeared on the mother's mobile phone from some number with four digits, which the young man, as the stranger had instructed him, forwarded to the social network. After that, her page was added to the "black list", and messages began to arrive on the applicant's mobile phone: "Thank you, the service is paid. Odnoklassniki". In total, ten payments were made from the phone account that day, resulting in Br700 thousand being debited from the account.
