Next year is expected to be a turning point for flax cultivation in the Vitebsk region. This was stated by the Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Nikolai Sherstnev, at a meeting of the committee, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.
The Governor outlined the main objectives, focusing on the technical provision of the industry, personnel training, and a responsible attitude towards work. The latter aspect also applies to the selection of land plots. The region has a plan for flax fields for the next 7 years, and it is the duty of district and farm managers to conscientiously adhere to crop rotation and ensure high-quality soil preparation for the fibre crop.
The head of the region is convinced that flax cultivation should be carried out by specialized farms, and there is no reason to sow the crop in small quantities in all agricultural organisations. Flax requires a significant amount of specialized machinery for technological sowing, cultivation, and harvesting. Purchasing it for each enterprise is not cost-effective. However, flax processing plants and flax-sowing organisations should have the full range of machinery and special equipment to carry out operations within optimal and shortest possible timeframes. The Governor emphasised that good flax is already grown in the Vitebsk region, but due to delays in harvesting (caused by a shortage of machinery) and the worn-out equipment at flax processing plants, it is difficult to obtain high-quality fibre.
In the very near future, the region will finalise the required amount of machinery and personnel, and determine the fate and development path of each flax processing plant. "Literally tomorrow, we will adopt the final scheme for providing machinery, and we need highly productive machinery that will allow us to work technologically and quickly. With the full set of machinery and adherence to cultivation technology, we will be able to manage flax cultivation effectively. We must make next year a turning point for flax cultivation in the Vitebsk region. This is the task set," stressed the head of the region.
