"I just want to warn you, the developers and others: if we make even the slightest mistake in forming parties, citing some kind of foreign experience, we will destroy the country, we will ruin it," Alexander Lukashenko emphasized.
The Head of State noted what could happen if many small parties appeared in Belarus now, each of which would defend exclusively its own interests. "Therefore, everything must be foreseen. And I see some shortcomings in the draft," the President stated.
He stressed that the formation of the party system is a very serious issue that cannot be underestimated. "We think: oh, a party - we will register it, and let it exist. No, it won't be like that! There will be a constant clash of interests. It's okay that in August and other months people walked around Minsk, mainly, you remember. But that was one bunch, excuse me, of protesters. Another force, led by the authorities, opposed them. What if different ones come out and walk around every day?" Alexander Lukashenko noted.
"Therefore, this is a very serious issue. I will express my opinion: we are not ready for this. And I have already hinted: when it is difficult in the country (and there will be no less difficulties, not because someone will impose sanctions on us - the world has changed, gone mad), in such a situation, smart people unite around some person, some group of people. They gather together and try to stand firm, to survive. And we will now start - pluralism. Remember, under Gorbachev, we laughed, chuckled: "pluralism". Who did we spit on? Ourselves. My statement will sound unpopular. But you will see it," the Belarusian leader is convinced.
On the other hand, Alexander Lukashenko noted, if a part of society has a demand for parties, it cannot be ignored. "Parties within the framework of the law, with different opinions, pro-government, opposition, and others – this is a normal process. But we must initially develop a very serious law on parties, so as not to stumble later and regret that we went down the wrong path. I make this reservation so that there are no claims against me later," the President emphasized. "We have no experience in this. We ruined the country because of this, the Soviet Union. It happened before our eyes. This is to prevent it from happening to Belarus."
