A smuggler diver was apprehended by Belarusian border guards on the border with Latvia last night, Denis Glebko, Assistant Head of the Polotsk Border Detachment, informed a BELTA correspondent. A citizen of Latvia, an undisputed master of underwater swimming, decided to use his skill for the covert transportation of 10 boxes of cigarettes. However, the attempt proved unsuccessful: he was detected by servicemen of the Polotsk Border Detachment 80 meters from the State Border on the bank of the Western Dvina River. As a diver's suit does not have pockets for documents, the swimmer could not identify himself. The State Border violator has been detained for further proceedings, and the tobacco products have been seized. According to Denis Glebko, smugglers use various devices to transport illegal cargo across water barriers, from simple rafts to GPS navigators. -0-
