A day of remembrance, "Partisan Glory of Shchelbovo Forests," will be held near the "Master of the Forest" partisan monument in Gorodok District on June 28, the organisers told BELTA.
The event programme includes a memorial rally "May Generations Remember," an exhibition of works by Great Patriotic War veteran Anatoly Kovalev, and a travelling museum exhibition "Partisans Went on Campaign." Guests can expect a photo project "What the Shchelbovo Forests are Silent About" and interactive platforms on the partisan theme.
The "Master of the Forest" monument was erected with money from partisans and opened in the summer of 1970 in the centre of the partisan zone during the Great Patriotic War in the Shchelbovo tract. The height of the sculpture is 5.5 m. The figure of a partisan holding a submachine gun reminds us who was the master of their native land during the war years. Nearby, on a hill, a concrete slab with an inscription is installed, and next to it is a dugout. The author of the composition is Anatoly Kovalev, an artist and native of Gorodok District.
This spring, at the initiative of the local district executive committee, residents of the district, work collectives, and public organisations, with the financial support of the Belarusian Peace Foundation, the monument was repaired. Information stands were installed next to the sculptural composition, and the territory was landscaped.
The organisers of the day of remembrance were the Gorodok District Executive Committee, the district organisation and the regional branch of the Belarusian Peace Foundation, the local council of veterans, trade unions, and public associations.
