Increase in daytime road traffic accidents involving wild animals

Overall, the number of incidents involving wild animals and injured people has decreased from 20 last year to 16 this year.

If previously about half of such situations occurred on high-speed roads, this year there were only two. The rest occurred on roads with normal speed limits, typically two-lane roads.

— Accidents involving animals have become more frequent during daylight hours on narrow roads. The edge of the forest is much closer to the roadway on these roads than on high-speed highways, — said Alexander Khromchenko, Deputy Head of the Department – Head of the Road Traffic Organisation and Road Inspection Department of the State Traffic Inspectorate Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, at a press conference.

The State Traffic Inspectorate is carrying out practical measures to avoid accidents with wild animals. Drivers are informed about areas with a high risk of such accidents, and warning signs are installed. After major repairs and reconstructions of roads, fences for wild animals are installed along the roadway.
