May 6, Vitebsk / Olga Bogacheva - BELTA /. An exhibition dedicated to the Day of the State Emblem and the State Flag of Belarus has opened in Vitebsk, the Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local Lore, where it was launched, informed a BELTA correspondent.
Emblems are a kind of visiting card of a locality, graphically reflecting the historical experience of the local population. In the Vitebsk region, the return to historical heritage began with the cradle of Belarusian statehood - ancient Polotsk, whose emblem was entered into the heraldic register in 1994. The work on restoring historical and creating new heraldic symbols gained active development from 2002. The exhibition "Heraldic Wreath of Vitebsk Region" includes 42 emblems of settlements in the region. It is important that it presents not only the emblems of Vitebsk and other cities of the region, but also of settlements: Vidzy, Kopys, Podsvilye, Ulla, Vetrino, Osveya, Surazh, etc. Each emblem has its own interesting origin story, which can be learned during a visit to the exhibition.
During the acquaintance with the exposition, museum guests will be told many interesting features related to the theme of heraldry, specialists noted. "The development of images of the emblem and flag of a particular settlement requires painstaking creative work by historians, local lore specialists, and artists, supported by public interest. The basis for heraldic symbols is usually their ancient predecessors, embodied using the modern language of graphics and artistic means. At the same time, heraldic symbols differ from other elements of festive city decoration in that they are filled with the historical experience of ancestors, their energy, which has always been directed towards creative work and the defence of the Fatherland," the museum reported. -0-
