"Seven" is a documentary theatrical work based on fragments of personal interviews with seven prominent women from different countries. These are stories of real people who have suffered from violence, harassment, contempt, humiliation, and various social restrictions. The play has already been staged in 30 countries and translated into 24 languages, including Belarusian.
The readers in Vitebsk will include TV presenter Victoria Senkevich, Counsellor-Minister of the Lithuanian Embassy in Belarus Donatas Augulis, volunteer of the "Premiera" theatre club Larisa Tuminskaya, Attaché-Consul of the Estonian Embassy in Belarus Kadri Luht, Head and Director of the People's Youth Theatre "Koleso" Vlada Tsviki, Second Secretary of the Swedish Embassy in Belarus Peter Moller, Deputy Chairman of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee Viktor Glushin, and Chairman of the Standing Commission of the Vitebsk Regional Council of Deputies for Social Affairs, Social Protection of Citizens and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Regional Organisation of the Belarusian Red Cross Society Galina Zhelanova.
"The performance in Vitebsk will also be accompanied by an expert discussion on the issues of domestic violence in Belarus. Representatives of specialised organisations in the city, whose activities are aimed at combating domestic violence, will take part in it," the organisers noted.
The performance of "Seven" is free of charge, with entry by tickets and invitations. A limited number of tickets will be available for those wishing to attend the performance at the box office of the Vitebsk Concert Hall on the day of the show from 12:00. The play starts at 17:30.
The staging of "Seven" in Vitebsk will be one of five planned in Belarus in October-November 2018. The initiative is being implemented by the UN Population Fund in cooperation with the Belarusian Red Cross Society and is aimed at fostering zero tolerance in society towards domestic violence, and is intended to initiate public discussion on this topic.
The event was organised by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in Belarus with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Sweden.
According to the results of a study on the prevalence of violence against women, conducted by the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in 2018, every second woman has been subjected to some form of violence at least once. The study was commissioned by the United Nations Population Fund within the framework of the international technical assistance project "Strengthening National Capacity to Combat Gender-Based Violence (with a focus on domestic violence) in the Republic of Belarus".
