October 17, Lepel /Own correspondent/. Among the issues submitted for deputies' discussion, the first was dedicated to the rational use of natural resources and ensuring environmentally favorable living conditions for people. The First Deputy Chairman of the District Executive Committee, Boris Yafremov, noted that the ecological situation in our district is characterized as stable. One of the most pressing problems is the protection from pollution and rational use of water resources.

There are 136 lakes and 20 small rivers on the territory of the district. The water surface area of all reservoirs is seven thousand 860 hectares, and the coastline length is 428 kilometers. The area of water protection zones is 43.8 thousand hectares, and the coastal strips are three and a half thousand hectares.

The measures planned by the projects for water protection zones and coastal strips of reservoirs and small rivers, adopted in December 1991, have been fully implemented. 35 livestock farms, seven summer cattle camps, 14 warehouses for mineral fertilizers and pesticides, one warehouse for fuel and lubricants, and 23 tanks for storing liquid mineral fertilizers have been moved outside the coastal strips and water protection zones.

In the agro-town of Vyaliki Polsvizh, modern full biological treatment facilities have been commissioned. Reconstruction of the sewage facilities of Borouka village was carried out using funds from the republican nature protection fund. The wastewater from OJSC "Lepel Dairy and Canned Goods Plant", which was previously discharged into the Esa River after local treatment facilities, has been redirected to the city treatment facilities. An iron removal station has been built in Borouka village.
