Lepel District is located in the south-west of Vitebsk Region. It borders Chashniksky, Dokshitsky, Beshenkovichsky, and Ushachsky districts.

Lepel is connected by highways to Minsk, Vitebsk, Polotsk, Orsha, Ushachi, Dokshitsy, Chashniki, and Borisov; it is the terminal point of the Orsha-Lepel railway branch, which is 130 km long.

Lepel District possesses rich natural resource potential, which in turn contributes to the creation of new export-oriented and import-substituting production facilities, and the development of export of goods and services.

The district has 136 lakes, 20 small rivers, and about 60 streams. There are significant explored reserves of underground water. Many lakes in the district contain sapropel reserves, which, depending on its composition, can be used as fertiliser, feed additive, in the production of building materials and adhesive additives, and as therapeutic mud.

The main mineral and raw materials available in the district are peat, sapropel, clays, sands, and sand and gravel deposits. There are 243 peat deposits in the district, 11 of which can be used for peat extraction for both agricultural purposes and for the needs of thermal power engineering. The peat reserves in these deposits (at 40% conditional moisture content) amount to 2966 thousand tonnes. 5 deposits of therapeutic peat mud have been explored.

Export potential of the district

  • The development of exporting enterprises of all forms of ownership, territorially linked to raw material zones and operating in the agricultural sector, as well as woodworking enterprises producing building materials from local raw materials, exporting construction chemicals, fresh and frozen berries and mushrooms, is of strategic importance for the district.
  • The most developed sectors, considering the tourist and transit attractiveness of the district, are tourism services, which account for more than half of the total volume of services exported by the district's enterprises annually, as well as transport services.
  • The Lepel land is a unique natural and climatic region where it is possible to organize diverse tourism: cultural and educational, health and wellness, ecological, agro-ecotourism, and sports tourism.
