On March 13, Vitebsk /Diana Kurilo - BELTA/. Solar water heaters, cycle paths, and a modernized boiler house will appear in Polotsk as part of a sustainable energy development plan. The presentation of this plan project was successfully held today, Anastasia Adamovich, Head of the Planning and Economic Department of UP "Housing and Communal Services of Polotsk", told a BELTA correspondent. Polotsk became the first Belarusian participant of the Covenant of Mayors, a European campaign uniting cities that have pledged to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, and in this regard, began developing a sustainable energy development plan. The first working draft of the project was developed by experts from the Spanish company "Bionet" and the Institute of Energy of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Based on the analysis of the energy consumption and energy saving situation and the results of the energy audit of ten facilities in Polotsk, conducted by specialists from the Institute of Energy of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Spanish specialists proposed a plan for the city to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. To this end, it was proposed to implement measures to reduce consumption and promote the use of renewable energy sources. In particular, energy-saving measures can be carried out in utility and residential buildings, the city lighting system, city and private transport, and at housing and communal services enterprises. In addition, experts have proposed wider use of local and renewable energy sources for electricity generation. The sustainable development plan project presented today identifies the main facilities to which the allocated technical assistance funds will be directed. In particular, the boiler house in the city will be modernized, five solar-powered water heaters will be installed by 2020, and the walls and roofs of municipal buildings will be insulated. On one of the city streets, only LED lamps will be used for lighting. As Anastasia Adamovich noted, all these facilities are consistent with the state program for energy saving. European experts consider the expansion of the cycling network to be another way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. For this purpose, a bicycle transport system will be developed in Polotsk, which will be coordinated with the city's master plan. Awareness-raising work among the population will be aimed at increasing energy efficiency, energy saving, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
