18 April, Kyiv /Lyudmila Stepnova - BELTA/. The European Commission will allocate an additional €110 million for the completion of the "Shelter" facility at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. This was stated today by the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, following negotiations in Kyiv with the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, as reported to BELTA correspondent by the press service of the Head of the Ukrainian State. The official amount of the contribution will be announced during the Chernobyl Donor Conference, which opens on 19 April in the Ukrainian capital. The Ukrainian leadership expects that this conference will raise the majority of the €740 million required for the completion of the "Shelter" facility and all works ensuring the safe operation of the Chernobyl NPP. The EU is the main donor in financing the "Shelter" project. From 19 to 22 April, international events will be held in Kyiv to mark the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl tragedy: the Chernobyl Donor Conference, the Summit on Safe and Innovative Use of Nuclear Energy, and the scientific and practical conference "25 Years of the Chernobyl Catastrophe.
