The aim of the week, which is held on the initiative of the World Health Organization in the European Region countries, is to increase vaccination coverage by informing the public about the importance of immunization for health.
Hotlines will be available in almost all healthcare organizations, polyclinics, and centers of hygiene and epidemiology in Belarus. Phone numbers can be found on the websites of the respective institutions. Anyone can obtain the information they are interested in regarding the prevention of infectious diseases. In particular, specialists from the Immunization Department of the Republican Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health will consult everyone from April 23 to 27. According to the WHO, vaccination prevents 2 to 3 million deaths annually worldwide from diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and measles. Preventive vaccinations have achieved significant success in preventing infectious diseases in many countries around the world. Smallpox has been eradicated, paralytic poliomyelitis cases are still registered in only three countries, and the number of cases of measles, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, generalized forms of tuberculosis in children, and other infections preventable by immunization has significantly decreased.
Belarus is actively progressing towards the eradication of certain infectious diseases and participates in WHO programs for the elimination of poliomyelitis, measles, and congenital rubella. An important part of these programs is protecting the population from the spread of these infections through preventive vaccinations among the most vulnerable age groups.
