The I. Sollertinsky Festival will present folk music for the first time

On November 25, Vitebsk /Sergey Kochetov - BELTA/. The XXIII International I. Sollertinsky Music Festival, which will be held from December 1 to 23, will bring together the elite of world pianism in Vitebsk and, for the first time, alongside classical music, will present folk music to listeners. The artistic director of the Vitebsk Regional Philharmonic, Nelly Matsaberidze, told journalists today about the features of the upcoming festival program, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.
The festival's concert program will be opened by the Dmitry Pokrovsky Ensemble – a unique singing group from Russia that has managed to combine the scientific study of folklore with its professional performance, as well as the traditions of folk music with modern musical culture. Expanding the genre boundaries of the festival, the organizers, with the support of the "Russkiy Mir" Foundation, managed to invite a group that essentially introduced the fashion for folklore music. The Dmitry Pokrovsky Ensemble's repertoire includes over 2,000 folk songs, tunes, dances, and rituals, and the ensemble has collected a collection of authentic folk costumes and musical instruments. The founder and long-term leader of the ensemble, Dmitry Pokrovsky, collected unique varieties of folk singing from various regions of Russia. Although the festival is dedicated to classical music, there is another side to the coin, and that is folk music, without which there would be no classical music either, noted Nelly Matsaberidze.
Two piano music concerts at the festival will be performed by representatives of the outstanding Russian performing school, who are part of the elite of world pianism. On December 13, pianist, harpsichordist, organist, Professor of the Moscow Conservatory Alexey Lyubimov, rightfully considered one of the most extraordinary and versatile musicians of our time, will perform in the Grand Hall of the Philharmonic. Among the musician's priorities is the authentic performance of music from the 17th-19th centuries, as well as music of the 20th century, including the latest. It is enough to say that Alexey Lyubimov was the founder and leader of the ensemble "Music - XX Century", as well as the initiator and artistic director (until 1992) of the international festival of avant-garde and experimental music "Alternative". Then, on December 17, a concert by Nikolai Lugansky, who is called the leading Russian pianist, is scheduled in the festival's programme. Pianists of this level are very difficult to invite due to their enormous workload; nevertheless, the organisers intend to maintain the high standard of the festival in the future, which is not inferior in its line-up to many music forums in the near abroad.
Another musical surprise for the festival's fans has been prepared by the Belarusian ensemble of soloists "Classic-Avant-garde" under the direction of Vladimir Baidov. The concert programme remains a mystery for the organisers as well, who are preparing congratulations for the artistic director of the ensemble on the occasion of him being awarded the title of Honoured Artist of Belarus this year.
The festival will be opened on December 2 by academic readings, which will last for two days and will bring together scientists and art historians from Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, and Belarus. This year, the theme of the academic presentations will be related to the musical culture of Vitebsk, events and outstanding people who essentially laid the foundation and played a significant role in the development of the culture of Belarus and other countries. The second day of the academic readings will be devoted to the study of the current state of various national cultures. -0-
