The XXVIII Ivan Sollertinsky International Music Festival will be held in Vitebsk from December 2nd to 13th, BELTA was informed by the Vitebsk Regional Philharmonic Society.
The festival will be preceded on December 2nd by a concert of teachers and students of the I. Sollertinsky Vitebsk State Musical College. The celebration will open the following day with a chamber music concert at the Philharmonic Society, dedicated to the 110th anniversary of Dmitry Shostakovich. The organisers describe his work as "a symbol of 20th-century music, with profound life philosophy, the tragedy of existence, and the eternity of ideas". The entire global music community is widely celebrating the round anniversary of the composer's birth with various creative projects. In Belarus, this took the form of a concert held in the homeland of the great composer's ancestors in the village of Shemetovo, Myadelsky District, on September 25th. This event formed the basis for the opening concert of the XXVIII Ivan Sollertinsky International Music Festival.
The string ensemble of the Belarusian State Academy of Music will delight listeners with well-known works by the composer. The programme will include String Quartet No. 3, Op. 73, one of the most dramatic works in this genre; the miniatures "Elegy" and "Polka"; and two pieces for string octet, Op. 11 – Prelude (Adagio) and Scherzo (Allegro molto).
The festival always delights classical music lovers with the participation of renowned performers. Thus, on December 4, the Philharmonic Hall will host a piano music concert by a guest from Israel, the world-famous pianist Alexander Markovich. The programme will feature works by Haydn, Chopin, Ravel, as well as fantasies on themes from Tchaikovsky's opera "Eugene Onegin" and Prokofiev's ballet "Romeo and Juliet". The Minsk ensemble of soloists "Classic-Avant-garde", a laureate of international competitions, has prepared its chamber music concert "Music of Movement 'Young Poland'". The audience can look forward to meeting this regular participant of the festival on November 11. The following evening, the stage will be occupied by the piano trio from Latvia, Riga MEM, with a chamber music concert, which will again feature compositions by Haydn, Shostakovich, and Mendelssohn. The festival will conclude on December 13 with a piano music concert, featuring the laureate of international competitions, the gifted Russian musician and composer Nikita Mndoyants, as the soloist. The Vitebsk audience will be able to enjoy his performance of works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Prokofiev.
Traditionally, the festival will be accompanied by exhibition events. On December 2, the Art Space at Tolstoho Street, 7, will open the photo exhibition "Peripheral Vision" by Dmitry Shostakovich, the grandson of the great composer. In the foyer on the second floor of the Philharmonic Hall, an exhibition of posters by students of the design department of Vitebsk State Technological University, "Playing with Classics," will begin its work – a unique visualisation of music.
