17 February, Vitebsk /Diana Kurilo - BELTA/. The Prosecutor General of Belarus, Alexander Konyuk, investigated the cause of death of two three-year-old children in the Sharkovshchyna district. He informed journalists about this before a meeting with employees of the Vitebsk region prosecutor's office, a BELTA correspondent reports. "On the President's instructions, I visited the Sharkovshchyna district and dealt with this terrible tragedy – the death of two young children in a fire. Final conclusions will be made later, but I am ready to state that there are no systemic shortcomings or errors by the authorities in this tragedy. The authorities did everything they could for this family," Alexander Konyuk believes. According to him, he also discussed the causes of the children's deaths at a meeting with the Chairman of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee, Alexander Kosinets, who had also previously met with the family and familiarised himself with their living conditions. As reported, the tragedy occurred on 25 January 2012 in the village of Velikoye Selo, Sharkovshchyna district. As a result of a fire in a private residential house, two boys, who turned 3 years old in December of the previous year, perished. Neighbours, who were doing yard work outside, noticed thick smoke billowing from under the roof and from the windows. Running to the house, they discovered a padlock on the door and called the fire department. Upon the arrival of the Ministry of Emergency Situations units at the scene, the house was already engulfed in open flames, and the roof had partially collapsed inwards. Charred bodies of the children were found under the collapsed building structures. A large family lived in the house, with the mother raising six children. On that day, the elder children, born in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2007, were at the Velikoye Selo Secondary School, while the mother left the younger ones alone in the locked house without supervision and, according to her, went to the shop. Currently, the family is living with relatives in the same settlement.-0-
