Approximately 40.2 thousand containers for solid municipal waste (SMW) were purchased in 2020 for the Vitebsk region, reported Svetlana Kuzmich, chief specialist of the utility services department of the main department of housing and communal services of the regional executive committee.
In 2020, approximately 40.2 thousand SMW containers were purchased for the Vitebsk region using funds from the state institution "Operator of Secondary Material Resources". This included over 37.6 thousand containers for the individual housing sector.
"For private houses, where utility enterprises install 2 SMW containers each, over 18.8 thousand sets were purchased. These private houses are currently being equipped with such containers. These are waste bins with a volume of 120 litres or 240 litres. Residents collect SMW in one of them. The second bin is for paper, glass, and polymer waste, which are then sent to sorting lines and further sorting points for separately collected recyclables. They are available in 12 districts of the region. Subsequently, the sorted recyclables are sent to processing enterprises in the region and the republic. Last year, 85.2 thousand tonnes of secondary resources were collected in the Vitebsk region," said Svetlana Kuzmich.
Waste that cannot be recycled is transported to SMW disposal sites. "In the Vitebsk region, there are 27 landfills and 48 mini-landfills. The mini-landfills will be reclaimed and decommissioned by the end of 2021," noted the specialist.
Additionally, 20 rear-loading garbage trucks were acquired to replenish the vehicle fleet of the region's utility enterprises, which allow for servicing all types of SMW containers.
