With the onset of cold weather, many begin to think about ice fishing, which is as popular as open-water fishing, and sometimes even surpasses it. Winter fishing attracts with the accessibility of any part of a water body or watercourse. However, ice and snow cover reliably hide the underwater world from the fisherman's eyes, and to find fish, he has to work hard: sometimes walk more than a kilometer and drill dozens of holes.
There are four main ways to catch fish from the ice: with a float rod, with a jig, by vertical jigging, and with tip-ups. Tip-ups and "kruzhki" (a type of float fishing gear) are so-called live bait tackle for catching predatory fish species: perch, burbot, pike, zander. They are very popular among anglers as they are quite productive. The tip-ups used by fishermen are mostly homemade; industrially manufactured tackle is usually used infrequently.
Please note! The Rules for Fishery Management and Fishing prohibit fishing using "kruzhki", tip-ups, "stavki", "kolobashki" and other similar systems and tackle at night, as well as without indicating the surname and initials of the person fishing. Installed fishing gear must not be left unattended – if found, it will be confiscated by fishery control authorities.
When fishing from the ice, do not forget about safety measures. It is considered safe to go on the ice if its thickness reaches at least 5 cm. The condition of the ice also matters, as its strength depends on water and air temperature. Sometimes 5 cm may not be enough – for example, if a thaw occurred after the ice formed, or if there are shallows with aquatic vegetation under the ice.
