30 July, Lepel /Own correspondent/ The open championship of the Children and Youth Sports School "Albatros" in rowing and canoeing, dedicated to the anniversary of this sport in Lepel, has concluded. -- Twenty-five years ago, in early July, kayaks and canoes were launched for the first time in our district.
Viktor Simakov, Deputy Director of the Vitebsk Regional Sports Club of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus, arrived to present honorary diplomas for contributions to the development of water sports to Valeriy Kharkevich and Pavel Yulkovich. He has been coaching for a quarter of a century. Pavel Impolitovich was also presented with a personalised badge. Why only him? The personalised badge is awarded only once for professional activity – Valeriy Yakovlevich already possesses such an award.
The Director noted that it is not only the awardees who are dedicated to their cause: Mikhail Gintoft and Dmitry Yushkevich started in sports at the age of ten, later stayed on to coach, and have been working as coaches for about 15 years.
This year, the judging panel decided to organise a race for veterans to conduct a masterclass. Eight veterans, aged between 30 and 48, took part in the race, including Master of Sport Alexander Pasmurtsev from Novolukoml and Candidate Master of Sport Andrey Sultanov from Orsha.
The competition was held over sprint distances: 500 metres on the first day and 200 metres on the second.
The younger participants were very nervous and anxious during their first races. However, they managed to pull themselves together and show good results. In the kayak races over both distances in the 2000 year of birth group, participants from Borovka excelled: Darya Zaretskaya took first place, and Darya Shamrina secured second. Among the canoeists, again in both sprint races, Lepel resident Ilya Demko took first place, and Ilya Kharkevich took second.
Among the girls born in 1998-99, competing in single kayaks, all prize-winning places were taken by participants from Lepel: Elizaveta Onoshko – first, Yana Belkovskaya – second, and Natalia Lankо – third.
