Lepel district is located in the south-west of Vitebsk region.

The district has significant forest resources, with forests covering more than 50 percent of the Lepel district's territory.

The abundance of water resources, especially lakes, creates favourable conditions for the development of commercial fishing. There are 131 lakes and 27 small rivers in the district. The largest lakes are Lepel, Okono, Bereshcha, Voron', Bobritsa, and Teklets. Lake Kakisino is a local nature reserve. There are significant explored reserves of groundwater.

The main mineral and raw materials available in the district are peat, sapropel, clays, sands, and sand and gravel deposits. There are 243 peat deposits in the district, 11 of which can be used for peat extraction for both agricultural purposes and for the needs of thermal power engineering.

Many lakes in the district have significant reserves of sapropel, which, depending on its composition, can be used as fertiliser, feed additives, in the production of building materials and adhesive additives, and as therapeutic mud.

The resident population is 31.5 thousand people, of whom 17.4 thousand people live in the city of Lepel, and 14.1 thousand people are rural population. The number of people employed in the economy of Lepel district is 13 thousand people.
