Previously, Novopolotsk joined the global UNICEF initiative aimed at protecting children's rights and creating conditions for their comprehensive development, receiving the honorary title of "City Friendly to Children". The new EU external assistance project, which started in November, is a logical continuation of a series of city initiatives. It aims to improve the quality of life for children and young people with disabilities and is designed for three years. Public associations "Belarusian Transport Workers' Union" and "Belarusian Society of Disabled Persons" will help implement all planned project activities. An interdepartmental commission for the development of an inclusive environment, as well as a working group open to all interested parties, will be established under the city executive committee.
It is planned to hold events for the implementation of Novopolotsk's sustainable urban mobility concept concerning people with limited mobility. The barrier-free environment will be expanded at School No. 8, the Palace of Children and Youth, and other city facilities. Ultimately, the city authorities aim to create conditions in Novopolotsk where every child, regardless of their abilities, can receive a full education. This will enable children with disabilities to have more interaction with their peers, and society to help them overcome self-isolation. Innovative approaches and practices for ensuring the accessibility of not only the educational environment but also all basic city facilities and services will be introduced into the activities of local authorities.
