To paraphrase a famous bard. …This life has had it all: strict teachers, unruly pupils, tears after failing grades and joy after excellent marks. In November, Secondary School No. 1 celebrated its eightieth anniversary. At the celebratory evening, we turned the pages of a "Family Album". Why not a school album, you might ask? Because school is a family. With its quarrels and first declarations of love. The photographs in this album will change, but the smiles on the faces of teachers and pupils will remain constant.
But how did it all begin?
…Recalls a graduate from 1940, Yulia Nikolaeva: "When the 79th Rifle Regiment arrived in the town of Lepel, the command approached the district department of public education with a request to open a Russian school in the town. There was no suitable building, so the Russian school classes opened in 1936 in the building of the Belarusian school. In 1939, the Lepel Russian Secondary School was built."
In the seventies, pupils laid the foundation for Komsomol Park; in the eighties, they replaced the stove heating, wallpapered the rooms, and created flowerbeds. The educational institution was named after Vladimir Eliseevich Lobanok. A museum was opened in 1989. Under the guidance of history teacher Lidia Aniskevich, the first "Poisk" (Search) group was formed, which collected material about the school and a famous partisan fellow countryman.
And in the modern stage of its life, the educators are keeping pace with the times. In 2000, the Secondary School was included in a regional experiment to implement the "Orientir" (Guideline) model of school-family upbringing for younger pupils. Teachers also worked on implementing the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus's innovative project "Implementation of a model for forming systemic thinking in pupils through the organisation of lessons and extracurricular activities." Since 2011, on the initiative of Valentina Khatskevich, regional Easter Readings have been held at the school. Since 2015, a model for supporting intellectually gifted youth in their professional development has been implemented.
Enriched by eighty years of experience, Secondary School No. 1 rightly prides itself on its graduates. One hundred and nineteen individuals graduated with gold medals, and one hundred and twenty-seven with silver. Among the winners of regional and national Olympiads, practical conferences, and creative competitions, there are those who have achieved victories at the international level.

However, the educational institution is renowned not only for its "chemists". From 1995 to 2009, it had the status of a school "with in-depth study of foreign languages". For example, Nadezhda Morar in 2001 and Alyona Sharlayeva in 2008 won the American educational program "Youth Chance in Culture" and visited the USA.
A special source of pride is the renowned athletes. Let's recall Stepan Popov, champion of the First European Games in Sambo in Baku and recipient of the "Fair Play" prize; Elizaveta Anoshko, two-time silver medalist of the European Junior Championships in kayaking and canoeing; Ilya Polonsky, champion of the Republic of Belarus in canoeing; and Aleksandr Bersanov, bronze medalist of the European Weightlifting Championships. In general, the number of stars of more than local significance runs into the dozens.
Behave well and study best at school? A prize awaits you. Based on the results of each term, four students receive a monetary reward from the medical center "LODE".
But all these successes, victories, and recognitions would not have been possible without the Teachers. I would always write this word with a capital letter. After all, it is thanks to them that we receive our ticket to life.
The school principal bears the greatest responsibility, perhaps. For the children, teachers, and technical staff. At the anniversary celebration, past principals were congratulated: Lyudmila Aleynikova, Alina Khatskevich, Valentina Khatskevich, and Oksana Kharlenok. The Deputy Chairmen of the District Executive Committee, Aleksandr Shidlovsky and Viktor Azaronok, and the Chief of Staff of the District Executive Committee, Vasily Polonsky, presented the school with a gift – a modern liquid crystal television.
Words of gratitude for long-term fruitful cooperation were expressed by Svetlana Mazurina, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the "Narodnaya Asveta" magazine. Yana Barinova, Maria Avtushko, Anna Lebedeva, and Ksenia Samokhval performed at the celebratory concert for their native school. Graduate Vitaly Khvatinets performed a song of his own composition, "Teacher."
Eighty-five percent of the current teachers hold the highest and first qualification categories. Many distinguished educators have worked and continue to work there. These include Honored Teachers of the BSSR Ekaterina Slovetskaya, Roman Zylkov, and Stefania Miranovich; the Order of the Red Banner of Labour recipient Fyodor Lyabikov; the Honoured Worker of Public Education Maria Korsak; the Honoured Education Worker of the Republic of Belarus and "Woman of the Year-2006" of Vitebsk region Valentina Velyugo, and many others.
It is not surprising that, following the example of their beloved teachers, many decided to choose the teaching profession. Valentina Logantsova, Leonora Naumenko, Lidiya Pekar, and Oksana Belskaya graduated from Secondary School No. 1 and returned to work there... The teaching dynasties of the Korsak, Shunevich, Misnik, and Zinkevich families continue... The school is not forgotten, and former students return to its walls. They also bring their children to the first grade. This is what the Loygskikh, Parakhonko, Korsak, and Levitskikh families did, whose three generations have studied and are studying at Secondary School No. 1.
As a graduate, I would like to congratulate all the teachers of my native school on their anniversary once again. And our "second mother," class teacher Valentina Logantsova. "Fives" are replaced by "tens," and electronic diaries replace paper ones, but as long as there is a teacher at the board and a student at the desk, the school will live.
