The narrow-clawed crayfish (or stone crayfish) is an object
of commercial and recreational fishing. The rules for its capture are regulated
by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of 2 June 2006 No. 699 "On Approval of the Rules for the Capture, Harvesting and (or) Purchase of Wild Animals Not Classified as Game or Fish".
In spring, when fishing for fish is prohibited, crayfish
capture is also banned. The periods of both bans coincide: in Brest and
Gomel regions – from 20 March to 18 May, in Minsk, Mogilev and Grodno regions –
from 1 April to 30 May, in Vitebsk region – from 10 April to 8 June.
Therefore, in most regions (and in Vitebsk region from 9
June), crayfish fishing is currently permitted. However, it is important to
remember that egg-bearing females and females with larvae are prohibited from
being caught throughout the year.
There are also some other restrictions. For example, it is
forbidden to catch crayfish with a body length of less than 10.5 centimetres (from
the tip of the rostrum to the end of the telson). For personal use, crayfish
traps of specific parameters should be used, no more than three per person, and
only during daylight hours. Leaving crayfish traps without visual supervision is
not permitted. Fishing using lighting devices and/or watercraft, as well as
hand-catching during dark hours, is prohibited. The catch limit is no more than
2 kg of crayfish per person per day.
For illegal capture of each narrow-clawed crayfish, compensation
for damages is set at 1.5 basic units (40.5 rubles).
A crayfish trap is a device for catching crayfish,
which is
a mesh square (circle) with a diagonal (diameter) of no more than 100 centimeters with bait fixed in the center (open-type lift) or a trap (no more than 100 cm long) with one or more (no more than 5) entrances with an entrance hole diameter of no more than 70 centimeters (closed-type).
