Firearm hunting for snipe is permitted using smoothbore hunting firearms (using cartridges loaded with shot) and only with hunting dogs – pointers, spaniels, retrievers.
When hunting snipe, it is important to remember that this species of bird occupies practically the same habitats in the summer-autumn period and has similar morphological and behavioral characteristics to its red-listed relative, the great snipe. Each hunter must be able to clearly distinguish these two species during snipe hunting.
We draw the special attention of hunters to the fact that the snipe differs from the visually similar great snipe by its white, unstreaked belly and black-and-reddish outer tail feathers. The great snipe has a streaked belly and flanks, as well as white outer tail feathers. It is the white outer tail feathers that allow a hunter to confidently distinguish the great snipe from the snipe during the bird's take-off and flight.
