The Petrus Brovka Literary Prize has been established in the Vitebsk region in the Year of the Book, the Culture Department of the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee informed a BELTA correspondent. With the aim of promoting the best literary works, enhancing the prestige of creative labour, and stimulating writers, the Regional Executive Committee has decided to establish an annual literary prize. Its nominees can be both individual authors and author collectives. It will be awarded in three categories: prose, including journalism and drama, poetry, and literature for children. Works for the competition can be submitted by the authors themselves, as well as by public associations and creative collectives. The winner in each category will receive a laureate diploma and a monetary reward of 30 base units (as of April 1, a base unit is Br100 thousand). The first laureates of the regional Petrus Brovka Literary Prize for 2012 will be announced in early 2013, as, according to the competition rules, creative works are submitted to the commission for consideration by December 1. The literary prize is named after Pyotr Ustinovich Brovka, a native of the Ushachy District, a renowned Belarusian writer and poet. It is worth noting that the region already has a prize awarded, among others, to writers. This is the Vladimir Korotkevich Prize, named after another famous writer born in the Vitebsk region. The regional Vladimir Korotkevich Prize was founded in 1999. It is awarded in the categories of prose, poetry, and for promoting the works of Vladimir Korotkevich. Now, the laureates of this prize will be announced once every five years, coinciding with the anniversaries of the famous countryman. -0-
