The assimilation of family values should primarily be based on parental example, not during lessons. This viewpoint was expressed by the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, at a meeting with the active members of the Belarusian Women's Union, as reported by a BELTA correspondent. The question was posed by the deputy director for educational work at the Mozyr State Regional Lyceum concerning the development of a new curriculum. She asked the head of state whether there was a need to prepare children for family life not only through elective classes but also by developing a curriculum aimed at fostering a culture of family life among adolescents, preparing them for marriage and responsible parenthood. The President, in general, did not support this initiative: "These are our values (you have listed them). They should be considered and assimilated from birth, from the moment a child is born until they mature and perhaps until death. And for this, there is no need for programs and lessons."
Alexander Lukashenko noted that all the topics mentioned, which form traditional family values in a person, were discussed in Soviet schools. It was just done somewhere between classes, before or after them, as well as within the family.
"It was a way of life. It is not necessary to allocate specific hours and programs for this," said the head of state.
In modern schools, this has unfortunately practically disappeared. Therefore, the President is not against the development of some program on family values and preparation for family life.
However, I ask you not to expect us to increase the number of school hours. I am in favour of children resting on Saturdays," he warned.
In any case, when making any decision, the President referred to the formula he had previously stated: "Proceed from my formula: we can do anything. But the first question is: do we need it or not? The second question is: how much will it cost?"
