President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has signed a law approving a new version of the Education Code. This was reported to BELTA by the press service of the Head of State.
The law defines the foundations of state policy in the field of education, and enshrines provisions aimed at improving the efficiency, quality, and accessibility of education, taking into account the development trends of the modern educational space and the practice of applying the current code.
In particular, the new version of the code provides for universal general secondary education (currently general basic education), and the conduct of final attestation upon completion of general secondary education in individual academic subjects in the form of a centralized examination. The procedure for its conduct will be approved by the Ministry of Education.In addition, the scope of targeted training for organisations located not only in small towns and contaminated areas, but also in other settlements is expanded; the functioning of colleges at the level of vocational-technical and secondary specialised education, and at the level of higher education – universities, academies and institutes is envisaged.
Distance learning is enshrined in the code as an independent form of obtaining education, and the possibility of implementing educational programmes through a network form of interaction between educational institutions is established.
Special higher education is introduced for certain technical and medical specialties. A new type of additional education for gifted children and youth is emerging, based at the National Children's Technopark.
The law also proposes other norms, including those providing for the clarification and redistribution of the powers of state bodies in the management of education.
