The Head of State noted that the participants of the meeting gathered in a broad format to discuss citizens' proposals and remarks on the draft amendments to the current Constitution. "Members of the Constitutional Commission and the working group are present here. Specialists have been added who, on the eve of submitting the draft Constitution for nationwide discussion, polished it, balanced it, and ensured there were no errors," said the President. "We agreed on the need for such a meeting at the end of last year. I would like to remind you that the nationwide discussion of amendments to the current Constitution has been underway in the country for over three weeks."
"I made the decision to widely publicize the proposed innovations in order to receive feedback and an assessment of this draft from specialists, enterprise managers, ordinary people, including civil servants, and labor collectives and organizations as a whole. As I am being informed, and what I see myself, the proposed amendments have generated keen interest. The very process of amending the Constitution and the upcoming referendum are of interest to our people. This is natural. All groups and strata of the population are participating in the dialogue," stated the Head of State.He also noted that state media are conducting extensive information and explanatory work. "Our opponents are also vocal. I am not mistaken. They are indeed vocal. I have a full analysis of all their statements. They are lagging behind, picking up any thesis, any comma, and starting to either criticize it or refute it. But what is happening there is beyond criticism. Now they have moved away from their main slogan - "Changes, changes!" - stated the Belarusian leader.
Alexander Lukashenko stated that the Constitution should be at the core of any changes and transformations, as everything must be done according to the law. "This is a natural process of change. And one must start as all civilized and educated people do. The Constitution must be the basis of these changes," the President emphasized. "Changes can be made in such a way that it will be worse than in Kazakhstan – it will be like in Ukraine. Therefore, everything must be systematic."
The Head of State also noted that one should try to learn not from one's own mistakes, but to draw experience both from mistakes and from positive examples of friends, neighbors, and enemies. "This is not my invention. Therefore, using these principles, we have moved forward, developed, and prepared these changes," said Alexander Lukashenko.
