"To respect not only one's own culture but also the creative achievements of other peoples is a trait of the Belarusian national character. We carefully preserve the treasures of the past and gladly learn about the art of our neighbours. I believe this is the secret of the peacefulness and mutual understanding for which Belarusians are renowned," said Alexander Lukashenko.
The Head of State is confident that such an attitude towards life is a reliable defence against interethnic strife, religious animosity, and other destructive phenomena that, unfortunately, are engulfing even the most civilised countries today.
The President noted that a large number of people had arrived at the "Alexandria Gathers Friends" festival this year. "In a short period, literally before our eyes, a modest gathering of fellow countrymen on the banks of the Dnieper has gradually transformed into a large-scale festival of folk culture," the Belarusian leader remarked. "Indeed, recently, both in our country and in neighbouring countries, there has been a growing interest in one's roots and the origins of national culture."
According to Alexander Lukashenko, it is particularly important that young people are also eager to learn more about the history of their native region and master the basics of traditional crafts.
