Lukashenko laid flowers at the mass grave of those who died in the war

On the Day of National Remembrance of the Victims of the Great Patriotic War and the Genocide of the Belarusian People, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko laid flowers at a mass grave in the village of Khimy, Orsha District, not far from his small homeland, BELTA reports.

In addition to the well-known iconic monuments and memorial complexes that recall the events of the war years, Belarus has thousands of such small graves and monuments throughout the country, which should also not be forgotten.

In Khimy, near the Head of State's small homeland, 18 residents of the village are buried, as well as tank crews who died during the Great Patriotic War, whose names are unknown.

The President laid flowers and spoke a few words, addressing Belarusians: "On this day, our Belarusians and not only them – residents of the post-Soviet republics – gather at iconic memorials, obelisks that are known throughout the world. Such as the Brest Fortress, Khatyn, and others. In order to honour the mass heroism of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War. This is right. But especially in Belarus, a huge number of feats were accomplished by small groups of Soviet people, simply residents of Belarus. There were many individual feats, especially by pilots and tank crews. And grateful residents throughout our Belarus have erected thousands upon thousands of these small monuments to groups of people and individuals, both nameless and named. We must not forget them. We must keep them clean and tidy. For they create the purity of our souls and hearts. On this day, I want to appeal to Belarusians to pay special attention to these sacred places."
