21 May, Vitebsk /Alena Tikhonova - BELTA/. A memorial plaque dedicated to the prominent local historian Nikolay Kasperovich will be unveiled today in Vitebsk, as reported to BELTA by the Regional Museum of Local Lore.
The commemorative sign has been installed in the regional centre at house No. 4 on Krylov Street. It was here that the scholar lived with his family in 1926. The authors of the memorial plaque are the renowned Belarusian sculptors Alexander Gvozdikov and Ivan Kazak.
Today, an exhibition dedicated to the 113th anniversary of the birth of the prominent scholar will also open at the Regional Museum of Local Lore. The exhibition features several stands displaying biographical documents, photographs, and scientific works by Nikolay Kasperovich created during his time in Vitebsk.
Nikolay Ivanovich Kasperovich made a significant contribution to the development of linguistics, the history of Belarusian culture, literature, and art. The scholar was at the origins of Belarusian local history studies, and his name is directly linked to the history of the establishment of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences. The scholar lived in Vitebsk for only two years, but this period was very eventful. Here, Kasperovich was engaged in organisational, methodological, and scientific activities. In Vitebsk, the scholar initiated a programme for the creation of a local Belarusian language dictionary. The materials collected by local historians under the guidance of Nikolay Kasperovich remain of great scientific value today.-0-
