We should learn from the veterans of the Great Patriotic War how they care for their country and city. This opinion was shared with journalists by the Chairman of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee, Viktor Nikolaikin, before the solemn reception of veterans, as reported by a BELTA correspondent.
About 20 war veterans attended the meeting at the City Executive Committee. Viktor Nikolaikin emphasized that attention is paid to them not only on the eve of solemn dates. Authorities, public and veteran organizations, social workers, and enterprises constantly help them, meet with them, provide them with necessities, and check their living conditions. "We must learn from the veterans how they care about our country and city," said the mayor. "Every year there are fewer of you, but I am glad that you have found the strength to come to us. We are grateful that we can live in a peaceful and prosperous country, make plans for the future, and raise children and grandchildren."
Alexander Blagov, a participant in the Great Patriotic War, was a sapper and fought as part of the 3rd Belarusian Front. "I went through so much and I am glad to be alive. Many times I had to crawl up to the enemy trench so close that I could see the Germans walking along it and smoking – the glow of a cigarette was visible," recalls the 93-year-old veteran.
"The main thing is that there should never be war again; we must cherish peace and live in friendship with everyone, and resolve problems peacefully. Because war takes lives," emphasized Alexander Blagov.
