The Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus, the Belarusian Republican Youth Union, and the Belarusian Public Association of Veterans (BPAV) are planning to hold a month-long campaign in April 2017 titled "Let's Preserve Memory for Centuries" dedicated to the repair, improvement, and upkeep of memorials, monuments, and obelisks of military glory, as well as common graves and burials of soldiers, partisans, and underground fighters who perished during the Great Patriotic War. According to Mikhail Orda, Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions, joint efforts can achieve more than individual actions, both in preserving historical memory, educating youth, and supporting veterans.
At the meeting, representatives of the public organizations summed up the results of their joint work over the year since the signing of the cooperation agreement. In particular, high praise was given to the project implemented under the auspices of the Federation of Trade Unions for the installation of a photovoltaic power station at the "Kurgan of Glory" memorial complex, as well as the trade unions' work on the restoration and reconstruction of memorial complexes and monuments to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War throughout the country.
The parties also supported the FTUB's initiative to develop educational tourism for schoolchildren, which involves visiting sites of historical memory. An agreement to this effect was reached in May of the current year. The heads of the trade union, youth, veteran, and pioneer organizations, as well as the Minister of Education, signed it. Today, the agreement is being implemented locally and provides schoolchildren with the opportunity to connect with their historical heritage.
Regarding the social protection of veterans, trade union organizations at all levels have carried out extensive work to include additional measures to support the elderly, veterans of the Great Patriotic War, pensioners, and disabled people in local agreements and collective contracts.
