The IAEA's Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission will commence its work in Belarus on October 2. Over 20 experts, led by the mission head, Petteri Tippana, Director General of the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), will conduct a comprehensive review of various aspects of regulatory activities for nearly two weeks, holding interviews with representatives of state administration bodies and supervised organizations.
The documentary basis for the assessment is the country report on self-assessment previously submitted to the IAEA. The mission experts are scheduled to participate in inspections at the construction site of the Belarusian NPP, at the State Scientific Institution "United Institute of Power and Nuclear Research – Sosny" of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, at JSC "Isotope Technologies", at RUE "Ecores", and at the Republican Clinical Hospital of Medical Rehabilitation. The IRRS mission will conclude its work in Belarus on October 14.
IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) missions are conducted to assess the compliance of regulatory activities with IAEA safety standards, with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness of the regulatory bodies of IAEA Member States.
An IRRS is carried out by a team of international experts, led by a senior representative of the regulatory body of an IAEA Member State. The outcome of the mission is the identification of areas requiring further improvement and the development by the host country of an action plan to address the identified deficiencies. Additionally, during an IRRS mission, good practices are identified that can serve as a basis for revising IAEA safety standards.
IRRS missions have been conducted in 36 IAEA Member States. Belarus is hosting one for the first time.
