The Chagall Readings at the Marc Chagall Museum in Vitebsk are a unique scientific event that brings together those who have something to say about the artist. This was stated today at the opening of the XXII International Chagall Readings by a researcher at the State Tretyakov Gallery, author of many art history publications, Yan Brook, BELTA correspondent reports. "The Marc Chagall Museum in Vitebsk is a special memorial museum. It understands its purpose. And if at the first stage it served to restore the memory of Chagall, then now, after two decades, it helps to understand and enter his work," believes Yan Brook. The Chagall Readings are one of the central events celebrating the 125th anniversary of Marc Chagall in Vitebsk. According to the Russian art critic, "the artist's anniversary, unlike many other round dates of famous masters, is not pompous and grand, but working." Exhibitions dedicated to the artist are held in all world capitals and major cities. "Chagall is a sought-after and welcome artist. And his museum in Vitebsk is in demand by those who research his work, who want to be heard and understood," emphasized Yan Brook. The scientific conference will conclude its work on June 10 at the museum. Art critics, historians, and archivists from Russia, Belarus, and Latvia have shown interest in it. The focus is on issues related to the biography and work of Marc Chagall, as well as the history of the Vitebsk People's Art School. In particular, Nina Getashvili, Candidate of Art History, Head of Department, Professor at the Ilya Glazunov Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, will deliver a report on "Chagall and Pirosmani: The Boundaries of the Naive," and Alexander Lisov, a doctoral student at the Institute of Art Studies, Ethnography and Folklore of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, will present his materials on the biography and work of Kazimir Malevich, "Kazimir Malevich: A Choice Between the Capital and the Province. The Year 1921." The exhibition "History of the Vitebsk People's Art School. 1918-1923," based on materials from the State Archive of the Vitebsk Region, the Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local Lore, the "Vitebsk Center for Contemporary Art" Museum, and the Marc Chagall Museum, is timed to coincide with the opening of the readings.
